Cesc Fabregas has been the subject of a £26m bid from the Red Devils, with David Moyes hoping that a deal can be concluded for the Spaniard in the next couple of days.
Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward returned home early from United’s tour of Australia to try and complete the capture of Fabregas and also deal with Chelsea’s tabled bid for Wayne Rooney, although Barcelona appear keen to keep hold of the midfielder.
Barça’s vice-president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, has ended any chance of a deal being struck: “Barça can ensure they will not entertain any offers for Cesc. He is completely non-transferable.”
Whether or not this is an attempt to bump up the price remains to be seen, with Moyes having publicly admitted that he wants to sign the midfielder.
“The chief executive [Woodward] has been dealing with it,” said Moyes. “I may have a bit more information in the next day or so about how it’s going.
Moyes also confirmed that Wayne Rooney remains on the books at Manchester United and that the player isn’t for sale despite Chelsea making the striker their number one transfer target.
“There’s no change. As far as players we’re looking to bring in, we’re trying very hard to make some additions to the squad. Hopefully there’ll be some good news in the not too distant future.”
