West Ham set to sign Jose Fonte and still chasing Snodgrass
West Ham will bolster defence with arrival of Fonte, with Slaven Bilic hoping Robert Snodgrass arrives too

West Ham United are likely to see Dimitri Payet return to Marseille over the next few days, although supporters will be encouraged to hear that Jose Fonte is close to arriving from Southampton.
It’s a slightly odd choice of career move for the Portuguese defender who helped his country win Euro 2016, with Fonte having recently handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s and declaring that he no longer wanted to play for the Saints.
Slaven Bilic will welcome the defensive steel that Fonte provides, with Claude Puel conceding that the player was inevitably going to leave.
“The situation of José is difficult for the squad and difficult for him also,” Puel said. “It’s not just about this window, I think since the beginning of the season it’s been difficult for José. He is training, working normally with a good spirit and like a professional.”
West Ham continue to pursue Robert Snodgrass, a player who has rejected a new contract at Hull City although bids for the winger have so far been rebuffed and the Tigers will be keen to retain his services.
This is especially after losing Jake Livermore to West Brom, with Marco Silva looking to make some recruitments of his own as he bids to keep Hull City in the top flight.
