West Brom v Chelsea tips – Baggies will provide first points for the Blues
Can Chelsea's disastrous start to the season continue?
August 20th, 2015
It really can’t get much worse for Chelsea – can it? The Blues have endured a dreadful start to their campaign and a win at the Hawthorns really is a must this weekend.
A 2-2 draw at home to Swansea City in Chelsea’s opening match was bad enough, however things went from bad to worse with a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad last weekend and failure to clinch full points against the Baggies on Sunday would be unthinkable.
Are we getting slightly carried away, given that we are only two games into the season? Not a bit of it. Yes anything may yet happen, but a win for Manchester United on Saturday would leave them some eight points ahead of Chelsea and anything short of three points for the Blues would be a disaster.
Boss Jose Mourinho’s response to last weekend’s defeat was extremely swift as he clinched the signature of Augsburg’s Baba Rahamn and also made serious bids for Barcelona’s Pedro and John Stones from Everton.
Thibaut Courtois will make an extremely welcome return following his one-game suspension and John Terry should also be in the starting line-up despite being substituted in the Manchester City defeat.
West Brom have as yet failed to ignite with no goals in their opening two Premier League matches and we would be surprised to say the least should they find the back of the net against Chelsea on Sunday, despite the fact that the Blues defence is less than solid. Baggies manager Tony Pulis has hinted at a few new signings, however it is looking increasingly likely that Saido Berahino will be heading to White Hart Lane following a bid by Spurs.
With pressure piling on Mourinho, a win for West Brom could be pivotal even at this early stage of the season and the hosts will have taken encouragement from their recent head-to-head home record against Chelsea with three wins and a draw to their name.
Nevertheless, should the visitors tighten up at the back, they will likely get off the mark in their third match of the season and an early goal would certainly settle the nerves. We do fancy Chelsea to clinch full points on Sunday, however we’ll be backing instead a Blues win with a couple of goals thrown in for additional value.
