There’s been plenty of talk this week about the possibility of Wayne Rooney leaving Old Trafford this summer, especially after the striker was left out of the team that played Real Madrid on Tuesday night. Many have linked the England forward to Paris Saint-Germain although Sir Alex Ferguson dismissed that prospect during Friday’s conference, with the Scot claiming that Rooney would be remaining at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future.

Ferguson said: “He will be here next year, you have my word on that. There is no issue between myself and Wayne Rooney. To suggest we don’t talk is nonsense. He understood the reasons completely.” Rooney will feature in Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea, the manager said.

“Tactically we got it right,” Ferguson said about the Real Madrid match. “We don’t always but we did then. There are no issues with the player and he will be involved on Sunday. I left out Shinji Kagawa after he scored a hat-trick [against Norwich last Saturday]. I thought I would get more stick for that.”

Indeed, it’s puzzling that so much is being made about a tactical decision that was effectively working until Nani was controversially sent off with the scoreline at 1-0.
