It was a pulsating FA Cup third round encounter which saw the visitors race into a 3-0 lead only for Manchester City to come storming back with ten men, although it was also a game that saw Wayne Rooney return to the scoresheet.
The England forward was reportedly left out of the team against Blackburn for a Boxing Day night out fuelling speculation that his latest bust-up with Sir Alex Ferguson might see him leave Old Trafford, although Rooney was happy to set the record straight on Sunday.
Asked if he had a point to prove against City, Rooney told ITV: “No, not at all. Everything that has been in the press of late is a load of nonsense really.
“There is no problem for me at this club, I want to be at this club for a long time.
“We knew it was going to be difficult today, going 3-0 up we maybe took our foot off the gas a bit.
“City got two goals and we had to make sure we saw the game out and thankfully we managed to do that.”
