Manchester City 0 Liverpool 1 – Steven Gerrard penalty wins first leg
Liverpool are close to reaching the final of the 2012 Carling Cup after a deserved 1-0 win at Eastlands on Wednesday night, giving them an important first leg advantage in their semi-final tie against Manchester City.

The Reds came flying out of the traps and were duly rewarded in the 12th minute when Daniel Agger was fouled by Stefan Savic in the penalty area and Steven Gerrard converted from the spot.
City were missing the suspended Vincent Kompany as well as Yaya Toure in midfield, while David Silva was also sidelined. Roberto Mancini took a gamble on Mario Balotelli although the Italian was replaced by Samir Nasri before half-time.
With the home team missing such key players, they lacked any real verve and it was a surprise to see Liverpool retreat during the second half when Manchester City could have been put out of their misery.
A mistake from Martin Kelly nearly allowed Sergio Aguero to score in the second half, while Micah Richards’ header from a corner was parried by Jose Reina, although the reality is that Liverpool were comfortable while City go to Wigan this weekend knowing that Manchester United and Tottenham are now breathing down their necks.
