Tottenham in pole position to sign £25m Christian Benteke

It’s fair to say that Aston Villa might be in the Championship were it not for the scoring heroics of Christian Benteke, although it appears the Belgian has played his last game for the Midlands club.

It has today been reported that the striker has handed in a transfer request at Villa Park, with Tottenham among the clubs interested in signing a player that cost £7million twelve months ago.

Benteke managed to score 23 goals in 39 appearances last season, with Aston Villa apparently willing to sell their star forward providing that the fee is handsome enough. It could be that more than £25million is required to prise the player away.

Spurs are looking likely to make a formal offer for the striker, although there could also be interest from Arsenal and Chelsea, with Benteke having proven that he can score goals in the Premier League last term.

The fact that the forward had such an impressive hit rate for a struggling club suggests that he could do even more damage for a team challenging at the right end of the table, with Tottenham set to switch their attention on Benteke after missing out on David Villa among other targets.
