Thomas Vermaelen set to sign for Manchester United
Red Devils set to pip Barcelona to the signature of Vermaelen who will arrive at Old Trafford for £15 million

With Louis van Gaal set to play a 3-4-1-2 formation with Manchester United this season, there simply aren’t enough centre-halves at Old Trafford and that is where Thomas Vermaelen comes in.
Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling have been fulfilling the three centre-back roles during pre-season although Vermaelen is set to add some backbone to a three-man defence by arriving from Arsenal in the next few days.
Sky Sports reports that United are going to pip Barcelona in the race to sign Vermaelen, with the Belgian set to shun the Catalan club and become part of the squad at Old Trafford.
Vermaelen has struggled to make the Arsenal first team in the past couple of seasons, with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny the two first-choice centre-halves at the club, although United are ready to give the player a new lease of life.
The defender started just seven Premier League games for Arsenal last season and isn’t prepared to spend another campaign on the bench at this stage of his career, having only played a bit-part role for Belgium at the 2014 World Cup.
It appears unlikely that United will go in for Arturo Vidal as the Juventus man looks set to stay put with the Serie A champions, with Van Gaal considering which players are surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
Shinji Kagawa and Marouane Fellaini look likely to depart the club after the Dutchman bemoaned the overload of number ten players at United, while the future of Nani is also unclear.
