Having made a number of changes to the team which swept aside minnows San Marino 8-0 on Friday night, the England boss is looking to bring back key members to the side for a game which will go a long way to determine whether or not the Three Lions can top the group – or face the prospect of a play-off for a World Cup place this autumn. Defeat against Montenegro tonight would put England five points off the top of the group, making it a straight dash to the end of the year with each others’ hardest game behind them.
Steven Gerrard is expected to return to the fold tonight for what will be his 102nd cap, while there are options open for Michael Carrick and James Milner.
Ashley Cole is expected to replace Leighton Baines at left-back, while Glen Johnson will start – presuming he manages to shake off a toe injury, and Danny Welbeck could also return to the side.
Montenegro must cope without defender Savo Pavicevic after he was sent off in the narrow 1-0 win against Moldova last week.
