Southampton are moving ever closer to the Europa League group stages, however Danish side Midtjylland stand in their way. Can the Saints grab themselves a home win in the first leg on Thursday and deny the visitors a valuable away goal?

Confidence won’t be too high in the Southampton camp following the side’s 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Everton at the weekend, however they are more than capable of bouncing back from this Premier League setback and put a foot in the group stages of this competition.

This is Southampton’s first European campaign since 2003 and it would certainly pain them to fail at this early stage of proceedings. Indeed, boss Ronald Koeman has made it clear that he aims to bring much-needed silverware to St Mary’s this season and he can move closer to that goal tomorrow night.

We’re not for a second suggesting that Southampton can go on and win the Europa League, however they need a win against Midtjylland to restore some much needed pride and confidence ahead of what promises to be a long and hard season for the side.

Southampton are more than capable of getting themselves a decent result on Thursday, however they will be facing a side which has kept clean sheets in each of their last four outings and who will be looking for that all-important away goal in the first leg.

The Danish outfit exited the Champions League in the qualifying stages on away goals at the hands of Cypriot side Nicosia and they will be desperate to avoid slipping out of this tournament at the play-off stage for the third successive season.

Indeed, this will be a tough task for Southampton and we’re expecting a cagey match, however the home fans will be trusting in star-player Graziano Pelle to deliver the goods when it counts and the Italian is our stand-out choice to score at some point of Thursday’s match.
