Magpies striker Ayoze Perez has acknowledged that things need to change at Newcastle United should they wish to avoid dropping down to the Championship at the end of the season.

The North East club suffered a 3-1 defeat to fellow Premier League strugglers Bournemouth at the weekend with the Magpies remaining firmly in the mix for relegation having secured just three points from their last six top-flight outings.

Apparently, Newcastle United have held ‘crisis talks’ regarding manager Steve McClaren’s future, however Perez puts most of the blame on his fellow players.

“In some moments we are not a team, we are not as one. Something has to change. It’s not enough – we have good quality in the dressing room, but during this season we have not shown it. We need to be a team. We have been playing good football at home – winning games,” Perez said to the BBC.

“That has been key for us – playing at home. I don’t know what happened but we have to change something. We have to think that we have 10 finals. It doesn’t matter how, we have to be a team and try to get points as soon as possible because we are in trouble.

“It’s our turn, we have to give [the fans] something special because Newcastle, the club, and the fans don’t deserve the situation. [McClaren] is our manager, we have to be with him. If something changes, I don’t know what’s going to happen – but right now we are with him because he is our manager.”

Newcastle have a tough assignment in their next Premier League outing when they go head-to-head with table-topping Leicester City on Monday, 14th march.
