Slovakia 0 England 1 – Three Lions huff and puff before blowing the house down
Adam Lallana injury-time winner helps beat ten-man Slovakia, with Sam Allardyce enjoying an opening victory
September 4th, 2016
England looked to be heading towards another goalless draw against the Slovakians on Sunday night, although there was a sting in the tail as Adam Lallana found a way through to put the Three Lions in the World Cup qualifying driving seat.
Martin Skrtel’s red card twelve minutes into the second half of the match gave England the major initiative, although it appeared as though their chance of victory had gone before the Liverpool midfielder broke his international duck.
Lallana has largely been an impressive performer in an England shirt, with the player unleashing a left-footed shot that just about beat the keeper and it’s a result that puts England in a strong position to now qualify for the 2018 World Cup in an easy group.
England threw the kitchen sink at the Slovakians after Skrtel had received a second yellow card, although the introductions of Daniel Sturridge, Theo Walcott and Dele Alli hadn’t seen England find the breakthrough.
Walcott thought he had scored at the death although the assistant linesman ruled for offside, with the Arsenal winger and captain Wayne Rooney protesting that the ball had run through from a Slovakian defender.
However, Lallana ensured that Allardyce can sleep easy this evening and bask in the glow of a winning feeling that deserted the England team during the European Championships.
