Rangers: Division Three Champions 2012/13
It might be a long time until we see an Old Firm clash, after the Scottish Football League decided that Rangers FC, in their new guise, should start life in the Third Division next season.
July 13th, 2012
A meeting of the SFL clubs at Hampden Park resulted in the ‘NewCo’ representing Rangers FC being placed into the Scottish Third Division, rather than Division One.
A proposal was put forward by the SFA to reorganise the structure of the Scottish Football League, should Rangers be allowed into Division One, but these proposals were turned down by 25 of the 30 clubs.
Prior to the vote, Dunfermline, Elgin City, Peterhead, Arbroath, Alloa Athletic, Berwick Rangers, Annan Athletic, East Fife and Clyde had all claimed that they would vote for Rangers to enter the league in the bottom tier. Other clubs had also voiced concerns about Rangers entering the league just one step below the SPL.
The decision also, of course, means that Celtic won’t have to worry about taking their SPL trophy out of the cabinet this season – the best odds that you’ll find at the moment are a paltry 1/25 on the Hoops retaining their title.
We’re not expecting much better when the odds on Rangers winning Division Three trickle out.
