There weren’t too many surprises when Roy Hodgson named his England squad for a friendly against Denmark on Wednesday 5 March, with Luke Shaw included in the thirty players who will assemble before taking on their Scandinavian opponents at Wembley.

The Southampton player is one of three left-backs included in the squad and now faces competition from Leighton Baines and Ashley Cole to make it to the World Cup, while his club team-mates Jay Rodriguez, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana were also selected.

While many have backed Adam Johnson to be included, the Sunderland winger has been overlooked by Hodgson, while there was no place for Everton’s Gareth Barry despite some bright performances for the Toffees.

Andy Carroll has also been left out of the squad, while Ashley Young’s hopes of going to the 2014 World Cup now look non-existent after the Manchester United man was not included, although team-mates Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley are part of the 30-man set-up.

The friendly against Denmark is the final game before Hodgson names his World Cup squad, with four goalkeepers included although it is expected that John Ruddy will be put on the standby list come the final cut.

Jermain Defoe is in the squad despite the fact that he’s heading to Toronto to continue his playing career, while there are places for young midfielders Ross Barkley, Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson.
