Richard Wright is Homesick
Pity poor Richard Wright. The journeyman goalkeeper has suffered another twist in the tale of his storied career, as only one week into his contract at Preston North End, Wright has made an early departure back to East Anglia where his family are settled.

The three-time Tractor Boy signed a one-year deal in May following his release from the club to become the seventh signing of a fairly prolific period for manager Graham Westley. It was hoped that he would provide a challenge for North End’s Thorsten Stuckmann, who was voted Preston’s Player of the Year for last season. However, only 6 days into the deal, Wright has opted out.
“It might seem somewhat dramatic, but I have only been away from my home in East Anglia for a few days and I know already that I simply cannot live that far away from my family,” he told the PNE website at the weekend.
“I have children settled in school, so moving isn’t an option. I think it is only fair to be honest now rather than down the line when the Club may not be able to solve the problem that I am creating.”
Graham Westley took a moment away from the search for a replacement to say the following of the capped England goalkeeper.
“”It takes a brave man to be honest in a difficult situation like this,” said Westley.”Richard thought that he could handle the separations from his family, but he has found it too much.
“He is a good man and I wish him well on behalf of all at PNE.”
Wright managed two friendly games for the England side; against Malta in 2000; where he conceded two penalties and saved one in a 2-1 win, while coming on as a sub against the Netherlands a year later. He understudied David Seaman for both club and country, as inclusion in the Euro 2000 squad was followed by the 2002 double winner. Wright made 22 appearances during that season, but found life frustrating as the understudy, and joined Everton. Injury has since blighted his career, but as he heads back home to be with family again, it’s surely only a matter of time before he gets an offer he can’t refuse.
