Manchester United took a big step towards the quarter final stage of the Champions League on Wednesday night when drawing 1-1 at the Bernabeu.

It was an accomplished away performance from Sir Alex Ferguson’s team who took the lead in the 20th minute after Danny Welbeck nodded home a Wayne Rooney corner, with Robin van Persie having chances in the second half to score another away goal for the Red Devils.
However, it’s a result that United would have taken before the match and they will be satisfied with the way they nullified the threat of a dangerous Real Madrid team who were limited to a handful of chances.
Cristiano Ronaldo was always going to be the focal point of the Spanish champions’ attack and it was the aerial threat of the former Manchester United player which really stood out, with the Real forward rising high to nod home an equaliser in the 30th minute.
However, the home side were unable to turn their possession into more goals before the interval and it was a fairly even second half which saw the visitors create plenty of chances, including two for Van Persie in the space of a minute.
Firstly, the United striker struck the woodwork from a tight angle and from the resulting corner, there was a shot on the spin which saw the ball dribble towards goal before Xabi Alonso was able to clear.
David de Gea made a number of smart saves throughout the match and United will now be favourites to reach the last eight although keeping a clean sheet in the second leg might be a tall order.
