Reading 5 Arsenal 7 – Gunners win League Cup tie after trailing 4-0
Arsenal looked to be heading out of the Capital One Cup after conceding four times in 37 minutes at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday night, although the Gunners somehow rallied to draw level by the final whistle and then scored three extra-time goals to win 7-5.

It was simply a remarkable football match, with the Royals flying out of the traps thanks to Jason Roberts’ 12th minute opener, with Laurent Koscielny scoring an own goal shortly afterwards. Goals from Leigertwood and Noel Hunt saw Arsene Wenger raging on the touchline although Theo Walcott’s goal before half-time gave Arsenal a faint hope of a comeback.
Some visiting supporters had left before that fifth goal of the game, although the ones that remained sensed a comeback and Olivier Giroud further reduced the arrears with a 64th minute goal, although Reading then defended manfully and Koscielny’s 89th minute goal looked simply to be a consolation.
As the home supporters whistled for the referee to blow up, Theo Walcott struck deep into injury-time and Arsenal went into extra-time as strong favourites. Marouane Chamakh put them into a 5-4 lead before Pogrebnyak drew the home side level.
However, Arsenal weren’t to be denied and Walcott netted his hat-trick before Chamakh scored a seventh goal for the Gunners and they are the ones into the quarter final.
