Transfer Deadline Day – this time, it’s pers-Ozil
When you truly, truly want to feel like your football club is inadequate in this day and age, you could do worse than keeping up to date with any old rumours going around on Transfer Deadline Day.
September 2nd, 2013
It comes but twice a year, this magical day where Jim White cannot forcibly be removed from the sports desk, barking numbers and place names as if he were a demented train conductor, while ‘Arry Redknapp does his bit for car door manufacturers by placing extreme stress on them as he forever leans out of his gas-guzzler to talk bids.
And there’s been plenty to talk about today already; as Gareth Bale was presented to the baying crowds at the Bernabeu, and everything he did and said was scrutinised by the European press; his choice of shoe indicating this, or his haircut inferring that. Not even at the Royal Wedding was so much conjecture drawn from so little activity.
And in other news, Arsenal have a war-chest. It exists. And with the impending purchase of 24-year old Mesut Özil from Real, they’ve almost emptied it. Personal terms are currently being discussed as the German international makes way for his Welsh counterpart, joining a London side who have received much grief from fans over the past few months for their crippling shyness in the transfer market. With Ozil’s price approaching £43 million, it seems that the Gunners can finally silence their less money-conscious critics.
Meanwhile, Liverpool has splashed about £25 million of their own in securing a pair of central defenders; French international Mamadou Sakho will join from PSG for about £18 million, while Tiago Ilori joins from Sporting Lisbon. Both men were on hand to see their new club defeat defending champions Manchester United; who are next on the list for “fan grief over transfer inactivity”.
