On that day in 2008

It's been five years since both halves of Manchester lost matches on the same day. Join us for a trip back in time! To five years ago.

According to my (admittedly hurried) search back through the archives, the last calendar day that the city of Manchester collectively registered nul points out of six in the Premier League was 13th September 2008. They’ve both lost in the same round of games before, sure; but there’s nearly always been that 24-hour gap while one team chuckles at its neighbours, safe in the knowledge that their televised game the next day wouldn’t go the same way…which it then did.

That’s five whole years. Five years! Two best friends aged 11, divided by red and blue when this last happened, will now have taken their GCSEs and left school!

Just for a treat, and rather than subject you all to the usual rigmarole of Moyes-related doubts and Pellegrini’s solitary away point, let’s dip back to a more carefree age.

On the 13th September 2008:

–          Katy Perry was about to her see number one single ‘I Kissed A Girl’ knocked off top spot in the charts by Kings of Leon’s ‘Sex on Fire’

–          Arguably the last memorable series of Big Brother aired on Channel 4; when contestants such as the Vain Couple Who Oiled Each Other Up, Albino Guy and Blind Guy faced off to win the viewers’ vote: the winner was…called Rachel, apparently.

–          The winning National Lottery numbers were 05, 21, 28 ,29, 40, and 44. The bonus ball was 35.

–          The film Ghost Town starring Ricky Gervais was released. Honest; there is a film called Ghost Town with Ricky Gervais in it.

Okay, so to cut a long story short, the most notable thing about that day probably was that United and City both lost. And here we are five years later; where were you when the final whistle blew? What will you tell the grandkids?
