Messi loses fight with boxer and taekwondo champ
We don’t know an awful lot about Argentine boxing and taekwondo but, given that Lionel Messi hardly got a look in for Argentina’s sports award, we think that they must be pretty good at it.
December 21st, 2012
Argentina held their equivalent of ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ this week and unsurprisingly, Lionel Messi was amongst the favourites for the gong. After all, he unofficially holds the record for most goals scored in a calendar year (88 – although that record is disputed in Zambia) and had generally been pretty handy for Barcelona in 2012.
So imagine the general surprise that the three-time World Player of the Year only managed to claim third place in the honours – behind WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, who won the award voted for by Argentine journalists.
Martinez won the WBC belt after defeating Mexico’s Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on points in September to win the world middleweight crown.
Second in the voting was taekwondo champion Sebastian Crismanich, who won Argentina’s solitary Olympic gold at London 2012.
The evening wasn’t a total loss for Messi, who picked up the award for best Argentine footballer playing outside Argentina.
