Is one Bangor City forward the best player in Europe?
It’s the ultimate dream team isn’t it? Lionel Messi, Christiano Ronaldo, Iker Casillas, Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Les Davies... Errr…. Hang on a second…..

The 32-man shortlist for UEFA’s ‘Best Player in Europe’ award was released yesterday and, along with star names from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and AC Milan, the list also features Les Davies – 27-year-old winger for Welsh Premier League side Bangor City.
Davies was Bangor’s top scorer this season, hitting 15 goals in all competitions as The Citizens finished second in the WPL. That compares with Messi’s 73 goals for Barcelona this season, or Ronaldo’s 46 goals for Real Madrid.
Davies’ nomination is explained by a perceived quirk in the voting system, which requires a journalist from each UEFA member country to vote for their top five players. It is thought the Welsh journalist selected Davies, and the single nomination was enough to earn him a spot on the shortlist.
Davies admitted he was stunned to be included among such illustrious company. “I’m flattered and honoured to be on such a list. I can’t get my head round what’s happened in the last few days,” he told Sky Sports News.
“I don’t think it is going to sink in for a long time…to be on the list with those people is unbelievable. Just to be nominated in the 32 is fantastic. I’ll take that – I don’t think I’ve got much of a chance to make the top three!”
The winner is announced in Monte Carlo on August 30.
