Alan Pardew is now looking to make a series of signings as the Magpies plummet towards the foot of the table, although Reading are now out of the drop zone following a late brace from super sub Adam Le Fondre.
Meanwhile, Norwich City could also be embroiled in relegation tussle after losing 5-0 at Anfield, with Jordan Henderson’s excellent volley getting the ball rolling for the Reds who might yet claim a top four spot.
Manchester City closed the gap temporarily on Manchester United with a relatively comfortable 2-0 win against Fulham, with David Silva scoring both goals for the Citizens.
Swansea City warmed up for their Capital One Cup match against Chelsea by putting Stoke City to the sword, with the visitors claiming a late consolation goal through Michael Owen but ultimately losing 3-1.
Aston Villa stormed into a two-goal lead at The Hawthorns but were unable to win the west Midlands derby as West Brom battled back to draw 2-2. Chris Brunt struck just after half-time and Peter Odemwingie ensured the Baggies got a share of the spoils.
