The Hoops scored the only goal of the game when Shaun Wright-Phillips struck late against his former club, with Chelsea remaining in fourth place behind Tottenham Hotspur after this shock defeat.

Rafael Benitez chose to make several changes to the team that won 2-1 at Goodison Park on Sunday, with Juan Mata among the players missing and the Blues seemed to lack creativity as a result.

Chelsea will welcome Demba Ba to Stamford Bridge over the next few days and the striker’s absence was felt at St James’ Park where Newcastle lost yet again, with Everton having come from behind to claim a 2-1 victory.

It was a dream start for the Magpies who took the lead inside two minutes when Djibril Cisse headed home a looping header before Leighton Baines produced an amazing free-kick to equalise for the Toffees.

Everton then scored a brilliant team goal which saw Victor Anichebe poke home from close range after good work from Marouane Fellaini and Nikica Jelavic.

Liverpool made it a very successful night for the Merseyside clubs with a routine 3-0 win against Sunderland, with Luis Suarez scoring another brace after Raheem Sterling had given the Reds an early lead.
