Manager Roberto Mancini was able to recall David Silva to the starting line-up for the encounter at the DW Stadium, with Edin Dzeko recalled for the game and the two players combined for the only goal of the game.
City had already carved out several goalscoring opportunities when Silva found Dzeko to open the scoring in the 22nd minute, with the away team spurning further chances to extend their lead.
Wigan had a poor first half although Roberto Martinez’s team talk seemed to do the trick at half-time and the Latics had a good go at their opponents during the second half, with Vincent Kompany missing from the City defence through suspension.
However, the Premier League leaders continued to have chances to put the game out of sight, with Sergio Aguero going on a mazy run before failing to apply a finish. Moments later he shot wide from a good scoring position.
Even so, City were able to hold on for an important win although they will need to improve for the visit of Tottenham on Sunday.
