Roberto Mancini’s team appeared to be controlling the match at 1-0 in the second half before Saints manager Nigel Adkins made a couple of inspired substitutions which turned the match on its head.

It was one-way traffic in the first half as David Silva missed a penalty before Carlos Tevez gave City the lead. However, there was dismay as Sergio Aguero appeared to sustain a nasty injury which could see the Argentine ruled out for much of the season.

The Saints kept their shape in the second half and the introduction of Rickie Lambert was to prove vital, with last season’s Championship top scorer finishing well and it was to get even better for visiting supporters when Steven Davis steered the ball home after a misplaced pass from Jack Rodwell.

However, there was time for City to rally and Edin Dzeko was on hand to restore parity before Samir Nasri struck to ensure the champions enjoyed a winning start.

Meanwhile, Chelsea also enjoyed an opening win thanks to early goals from Branislav Ivanovic and Frank Lampard, with Eden Hazard enjoying an eye-catching debut and the Blues have a chance to go top on Wednesday when they play Reading.
