To be in the relegation zone at Christmas is bad, but as many teams have proved in recent seasons, an escape is more than possible. It’s best to get a move on and claw your way back up as soon as possible though, so how will Wigan, Blackburn and Bolton fare in their Boxing Day matches.
Man Utd v Wigan
Ouch – it’s not looking good for Wigan is it? Manchester United are fully focussed on their battle with City to top the league and they’re not likely to drop points against their ‘lowly’ neighbours – especially at home.
All the smart money must be on a home win, but miracles do happen at this time of year.

Bolton v Newcastle
Bolton are on a high after beating their local relegation rivals, Blackburn Rovers, and they could be feeling like they’re on a roll now. But they’re up against what lazy pundits are calling “the surprise package of the season” in Newcastle.
Although Newcastle are still hovering in a strong position at the top of the table, their form has dropped off a bit – they really should have had a win against Swansea last weekend.
It’s hard to call, but we reckon 1-0 to Bolton. Check out the latest odds.
Liverpool v Blackburn Rovers
Will Blackburn have a caretaker manager in place for this game? Maybe they will have gone and appointed an exciting replacement for Steve Kean? Maybe Phil Brown will be named as their new boss? It’s hard to predict what will happen, when a new manager could give them the traditional ‘bounce back’ and propel them to victory. Even more unpredictable are Liverpool who aren’t managing to fire on all cylinders in every game this season.
