Rickie Lambert put Southampton into the lead at St Mary’s before the Dutchman levelled the scoreline, although Morgan Schneiderlin restored Saints’ advantage and it looked as though United were down and out before a quick fire brace from RVP sealed the points in dramatic fashion.

Earlier in the afternoon, Arsenal produced a fine performance to win 2-0 at Liverpool thanks to goals from Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla. The German latched on to Cazorla’s pass in the first half to fire past Reina, while it was the Spaniard who doubled his team’s lead.

The Gunners have now kept three consecutive clean sheets although Liverpool have experienced their worst start for 50 years even if just three games have been played.

Newcastle United were made to work hard to earn a point at home to Aston Villa on Sunday, with Ciaran Clark putting the visitors into a first-half lead before an excellent finish from Hatem Ben Arfa ensured a share of the spoils.
