Vincent Kompay returned to the City line-up after a four game suspension, although Roberto Mancini’s team seemed to miss Yaya Toure in midfield and it was Darron Gibson who produced a spectacular finish to seal three precious points for the Toffees.

Meanwhile, the red half of Merseyside were also celebrating after Liverpool comfortably beat Wolves 3-0 at Molineux thanks to goals from Andy Carroll, Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt.

Mick McCarthy’s team remain in 19th place and it remains to be seen whether the Irishman will remain at the helm for the rest of the season.

Manchester United are level on points with City thanks to a 2-0 win over Stoke City, with the Red Devils scoring a penalty either side of half-time to claim the spoils. Javier Hernandez scored the first from the spot before Dimitar Berbatov doubled the advantage.

Tottenham Hotspur are now just five points off the top after a routine 3-1 win over Wigan which saw Gareth Bale continue his brilliant season by scoring a brace against the hapless Latics.

The other game of the night saw Swansea City come desperately close to beating Chelsea, only for the Blues to grab a last-gasp equaliser. Scott Sinclair opened the scoring against his former club and Ashley Cole was then sent off before Jose Bosingwa found the net at the death.
