The two teams cancelled each other out for most of the first half, with both defences standing strong although Steven Taylor’s trip on Emmanuel Adebayor just before half-time had the referee pointing to the spot.

Rafael Van der Vaart made no mistake with his penalty to send Tottenham into a lead that had been scarcely deserved, although if the first half was a drab affair, then the second half sprang into life from the kick-off.

Jonas Gutierrez’s mazy run down the left flank allowed the Argentine to cross and Demba Ba made no mistake from close range, with Brad Friedel unable to stop the ball crossing the line.

Newcastle starting to get into the ascendancy although Spurs continued to be dangerous on the break and the introduction of Jermain Defoe in place of Rafael Van der Vaart would yield dividends within a matter of minutes.

Some smart work from Scott Parker and Luka Modric saw the ball played through to Defoe and he turned sharply before firing past Tim Krul to give the visitors the lead for the second time.

Tottenham started to control the match and Newcastle seemed to be struggling to gain possession although the Spurs defence gave Shola Ameobi the chance to shoot with a few minutes left and the substitute equalised.

The Magpies hammered on the door for a winner although Tottenham stood strong and a 2-2 draw was the fair result.
