Manchester United thwarted in their bid to sign RVP
Sir Alex Ferguson cut an exasperated figure after Manchester United’s friendly match against Barcelona on Wednesday night, with the Scot unable to explain why Arsenal are unwilling to allow Robin van Persie to make the switch from the Emirates to Old Trafford.

It might have something to do with the fact that selling the Dutchman to their Premier League rivals is marginally worse than the 28-year-old going to Manchester City, with Arsene Wenger hoping the third option of the striker joining Juventus materialises.
Van Persie has made it clear that he sees his future beyond Arsenal and United have tabled a bid for the player, with the north-west club now playing a waiting game ahead of the new season starting.
“We have made a bid and they [Arsenal] have been trying to negotiate with other clubs,” said the United manager. “I don’t have a gut feeling on it at the moment, I must admit. We’re not getting any breakthrough with Arsenal. It’s difficult to say why they’re operating this way. I don’t know what their thoughts are because they’re not giving anything away.
“I can’t give you any more information,” Ferguson added. “We are trying our best and hopefully it will come our way but there’s no progress at this moment in time. We just have to persevere.”
