Steve Kean has been under major pressure from supporters this season, although the Scot saw his team race into an early lead after Dimitar Berbatov hauled down Christopher Samba in the penalty area.
Yakubu made no mistake with his spot kick and Rovers continued to hold a 1-0 lead going into the interval.
Sir Alex Ferguson decided to leave Wayne Rooney out of the squad completely, while Javier Hernandez was withdrawn at half-time, although it was a lack of midfield creativity which was the main problem for the Red Devils.
The introduction of Anderson didn’t help much in that regard, with Blackburn doubling their lead in the 51st minute when Yakubu broke through the United defence to finish smartly and leave the champions with a mountain to climb.
It took just a minute for the home side to reduce the arrears thanks to Berbatov who was also on hand ten minutes later to convert Valencia’s cross and it appeared that United would complete a thrilling comeback.
Nevertheless, the visitors held steady in defence and a rare corner saw them take the lead again in the 80th minute. Grant Hanley was allowed two bites of the cherry as he nodded home and Blackburn saw the match out to achieve a massive victory.
