Manchester City clinch Premier League title in dramatic fashion
As expected, Manchester City have been crowned champions of England, although Sunday’s match against QPR could not have been a more dramatic encounter.
May 13th, 2012
Roberto Mancini’s side dominated the first half although they were frustrated by some stout Rangers defending before Pablo Zabaleta’s shot was only parried by Paddy Kenny and the ball ended up looping into the net.
Now the Citizens were just 45 minutes from claiming the Premier League title although the visitors were able to draw level shortly after the interval when Djibril Cisse found the net.
Just as the Hoops were getting a foothold in this amazing game, Joey Barton clashed with Carlos Tevez and it was the QPR captain who was given his marching orders, with the former City midfielder also appearing to headbutt Vincent Kompany.
Even so, Rangers dug deep and they were unbelievably in front in the 66th minute when good work from Armand Traore saw the ball float into the penalty area and Jamie Mackie’s downward header beat Joe Hart to leave the Etihad Stadium stunned.
City still had half an hour to claim the two goals needed for the title, although they were unable to find a way past the ten men of QPR until the dying embers of the game.
Edin Dzeko’s header found the net as the game approached five minutes of injury time, before the ball found its way to Sergio Aguero and the Argentine kept a cool head to ensure that City were champions.
