Craig Bellamy and Andy Carroll both lined up against their former club and it was the Welshman’s brace that turned the game on its head after the Magpies had gone into an early lead.

Jonas Gutierrez’s cross in the 25th minute appeared to flick off the arm of Daniel Agger leaving Jose Reina with little chance in the Liverpool goal, although Bellamy restored parity moments later.

The forward has been one of the team’s best players in recent weeks and his popularity among the home supporters increased further when giving Liverpool a 67th minute lead.

Demba Ba came very close to making the scoreline 2-2 moments later although Martin Skrtel was on hand to pull off an excellent goal line clearance, with Kenny Dalglish choosing to introduce Steven Gerrard moments later.

Liverpool’s captain fantastic wasted no time in making an impact on the game, with Jose Enrique threading the ball through to Jordan Henderson who found Gerrard in the Newcastle penalty area. The England midfielder slotted the ball past Tim Krul to ensure victory for the Reds.

Liverpool are now up to fifth in the Premier League table and they are level on points with 4th place Chelsea.
