It’s taken a little while for Roberto Di Matteo to get his man, although Chelsea confirmed the signing of César Azpilicueta from Marseille on Friday.
The fee is thought to be in the region of £7 million, with Azpilicueta making his last appearance for Marseille on Saturday during a 2-0 win against Sochaux.
Since Jose Bosingwa left Stamford Bridge in the summer, Chelsea have identified the 22-year-old as a player that they wanted to sign and Azpilicueta was in London during the summer to represent Spain at the London Olympics.
“César Azpilicueta transfer to Chelsea’s is official. The Spanish defender has signed with the Champions of Europe 2012,” the Marseille statement said.
Chelsea confirmed the deal with a statement on their own website. “Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of César Azpilicueta,” the statement said.
“The 22-year-old right-back, who recently represented Spain at the London Olympics, arrives at Stamford Bridge following a two-year spell in France’s Ligue 1 with Marseille.”
It appears as though Victor Moses will also be signing for Chelsea imminently, with the Wigan forward set to increase competition for places after the departure of Salomon Kalou and Didier Drogba.
