Rovers were architects of their own downfall, conceding two sloppy goals to a much-changed Liverpool side, clawing their way back into the match and then allowing Andy Carroll to nod home in injury time.

Kenny Dalglish made several changes to the team that drew with Aston Villa at the weekend and it was Maxi Rodriguez who scored twice, with the Argentine converting Craig Bellamy’s cross before tucking home a rebound shortly afterwards.

Liverpool were controlling the game until Junior Hoilett broke through the visitors’ defence and Doni halted the forward in his tracks which meant a penalty for the home side and a red card for the goalkeeper.

Brad Jones’ first job was to save Yakubu’s lame penalty, although the Nigerian swiftly made amends by nodding home to reduce the arrears and the same player would equalise in the second half when Jones made a hash of a clearance and then bundled his former Middlesbrough team-mate over.

It appeared that Blackburn would go on to claim all three points although they were unable to find a way past Liverpool and Daniel Agger’s header found Carroll in space so that the £35 million man could barely miss with his header from short range.
