Liverpool leapfrogged Newcastle United in the Premier League table on Sunday, with the Reds beating Aston Villa 2-0 in what should be their most comfortable away game of the season.
The Reds were rarely troubled by a Villa defence missing Darren Bent and Gabriel Agbonlahor, with Craig Bellamy and Martin Skrtel scoring early goals before the visitors went on to spurn a number of second-half chances.
Both goals came from a corner, with Jonjo Shelvey and Luis Suarez helping to cause disarray in the Villa box before Craig Bellamy slotted home.
Bellamy was to turn provider moments later when Skrtel rose to head into the net and double Liverpool’s advantage, causing delight for the thousands of visiting supporters.
Villa really struggled to have a cutting edge in attack, with Emile Heskey trying to hold a line against his former club, although Alex McLeish’s side just ran into a brick wall of white shirts every time they went forward.
Luis Suarez was culpable of missing two gilt-edged chances, with the Uruguayan striking the crossbar with one shot, while his neat lob over Guzan rebounded back off the post.
It’s a victory which keeps Liverpool in the hunt for a Champions League place next season, although Villa remain tenth and it could be a long hard winter for the Midlands side.
