Newcastle United manager “really worried” about new football season
Rafael Benitez claims everything is wrong behind the scenes at St James’ Park

Newcastle United are not in a great situation ahead of the new season starting, with the Magpies having failed to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
Rafael Benitez cuts an increasingly exasperated figure following the club’s inability to land the signature of Salomon Rondon, with the Tyneside club unable to meet West Brom’s £16.5 million release clause.
Following Wednesday’s 4-0 friendly defeat against Braga, Benitez suggested that there was plenty wrong at the club, with Mike Ashley continuing to own the club despite having ambitions to sell.
“When things are not going well off the pitch you can see a reflection on the pitch,” said Benítez.
When asked whether he was referring to recruitment he replied: “Everything – I’m really worried.”
With regard to being asked whether deals were close he said: “I have no idea. The fans have to be concerned, we are concerned. I’m really worried.
“We can talk [he and Newcastle managing director Charnley] and be close [to making signings] but after we are not so close,” he said. “I think we still need three or four players.”
