Nemanja Vidic has helped Manchester United win several pieces of silverware, although it appears the 32-year-old is nearing the end of his career at Old Trafford, with several newspapers today reporting that the central defender will leave the club at the end of the season.
Vidic has been one of the best defenders in the history of the club, having arrived in 2006 from Spartak Moscow. He has made 201 appearances for the champions to date and scored fifteen goals, striking up a solid partnership with Rio Ferdinand for several seasons.
There has been plenty of speculation surrounding his future in recent months and it’s quite possible that David Moyes has already been planning for life without a player who has become increasingly prone to injury.
Vidic’s contract will expire this summer and no new deal has been discussed, with the player determined to leave England and potentially join Internazionale who are the favourites to sign him.
In a statement he said: “It’s the last year of my contract and I have had eight wonderful years here. My time at this great club will always rank as the best years of my career. I never could have imagined winning 15 trophies and I will certainly never forget that fantastic night in Moscow [winning the Champions League], memories that will live with me and the fans forever.
“However, I have decided that I will move on at the end of this season. I want to challenge myself again and try to make the best of myself in the coming years. I’m not considering staying in England as the only club I ever wanted to play for here is Manchester United and I was lucky enough to be part of this club for so many years. I’ve got a few options to move on and I will choose the right one for me and for my family.
“I am now going to focus all my efforts on playing for Manchester United and do the best I can for the team until the end of the season.”
Moyes now have another area in which to strengthen as the United manager looks to continue rebuilding his squad following Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure.
