We’re all looking forward to Saturday evening’s clash between two north-west rivals whose hatred for each other is deep-rooted.

The flames clearly don’t need fanning although that hasn’t stopped Louis van Gaal claiming that Manchester United will beat Liverpool at Old Trafford but stopped short of saying his team were title contenders.

The Dutchman’s training methods have apparently caused ructions with the players over the past fortnight, with Van Gaal admitting that the defeat at Swansea a fortnight ago was his fault but claims the team will return to winning ways on Saturday.

“Maybe third or second place is realistic but I expect us to go for it next season,” he said when asked whether United would win the title at a Q&A session.

On the Swansea defeat, he said: “I am sorry, the defeat, was my fault. Don’t worry, we will win on Saturday [against Liverpool].

“At Barcelona when the team is losing fans wave their white hankies, Munich fans start whistling and at Ajax the fans call for the previous manager.

“Manchester United fans get behind their manager, they get behind their team. That is why United fans are the best in the world.”

Nevertheless, a failure to beat Liverpool on Saturday could see some fans start to turn on a manager who has been given a lot of money to spend at Manchester United.

The team look particularly toothless in attack, with Wayne Rooney yet to score a Premier League goal this term and the jury is still out on Memphis Depay who has only shone against Club Brugge in the Champions League.
