Manchester United’s pre-season is virtually complete and Louis van Gaal is feeling positive about the new campaign after watching his team come from a goal down to beat Liverpool on Monday evening.
Goals from Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Jesse Lingard helped United claim a victory in their friendly match against Merseyside rivals, with Van Gaal once again employing wing-backs to great effect.
The Dutchman’s side are third favourites to win the title next term and he expects a strong challenge after a series of satisfactory friendly matches.
“This will give us momentum, for sure,” the United manager said.
“It’s always better to win. First we beat Roma, then we beat Inter Milan with penalties but we were much better, then we beat Madrid and then we had a test against a Premier League team.”
An impressive series of performances has seen the bookies install United as third favourites and Van Gaal was keen to single out Wayne Rooney for special praise after a match-winning performance.
“He was always a man who is a winner,” Van Gaal said.
“He deserved (to be player of the tournament) because he scored a lot of goals and gave a lot of assists.
“The goal was very important for him. It was a wonderful goal when you see the attack and what he did to push the ball under the legs of the opponent but also in the corner of the goal.
“It was a great cross from Chicharito (Hernandez) also. It was a very good attack.”
