The Dutchman turned home Patrice Evra’s cross in the 19th minute before turning provider just after half-time when his free-kick was nodded home by Evra via the head of Nemanja Vidic.
It was a deserved victory for United despite having to withstand late pressure from Liverpool who reduced the arrears almost straight after that Vidic goal when substitute Daniel Sturridge fired home after Steven Gerrard’s shot had been parried by David de Gea.
Sturridge had a golden chance to equalise at the death when he fired over the crossbar after excellent work from Luis Suarez, although the visitors weren’t in the match until the last 20 minutes of the game, with United having dominated until then.
Van Persie’s movement caused problems throughout the game and it required a goal line clearance from Martin Skrtel to deny the Dutchman scoring a second, while the former Arsenal forward nearly beat Reina with an exquisite piece of skill towards the end of the match.
Liverpool looked a good deal better when reverting to a 4-4-2 formation after Lucas was replaced by Sturridge and Brendan Rodgers will be encouraged by the character shown by his team if not the result.
