Manchester United 2 Everton 0 – Red Devils on verge of 20th title
Sir Alex Ferguson suggested that he was going to play a weakened team for Sunday’s Premier League match although there weren’t too many players rested ahead of Wednesday night’s showdown at the Bernabeu.

Manchester United were not at their best against Everton although goals from Ryan Giggs and Robin van Persie ensured that they now have a twelve-point lead over Manchester City and the title race is over bar the shouting.
The Toffees actually looked bright during the first half of the match and a couple of goalmouth scrambles could have seen them find the net, although the Red Devils were typically clinical in front of goal.
Van Persie slipped the ball to Giggs in the 13th minute who made no mistake after his shot rebounded off the post and into the net. The Welshman has now scored in 23 consecutive seasons for United.
The Dutchman doubled his team’s advantage after a clever ball from the impressive Rafael saw the Premier League’s leading scorer dance past Tim Howard before slipping the ball into an empty net.
Manchester United were then able to close shop as Everton were limited to half-chances, with Nikica Jelavic looking lively after appearing as a second-half substitute. Marouane Fellaini helped the Toffees win the reverse fixture although the Belgian was largely nullified and the Merseyside club face an uphill battle to finish in the top four.
