Many people don’t like to read too much into pre-season friendly matches, although there was plenty to like about Manchester City’s recent performance against Tottenham in Nashville.
Goals from John Stones, Raheem Sterling and Brahim Diaz secured a convincing 3-0 victory, with City having previously beaten Real Madrid 4-1 and there was no disguising Pep Guardiola’s delight.
“We haven’t dominated like today,” Guardiola said. “Last season we were good, but not in 90 minutes like that. We cannot forget which team we played. Tottenham for the most part of last season played the best football. It’s pre-season, but we didn’t have a performance like that last season.”
He also told the club’s website: “The results are good for confidence and the way we did it, our performance is good. I’m so satisfied, especially in the last two games.”
Kyle Walker and Danilo were singled out for special praise, with the bookmakers having Manchester City as favourites to win the Premier League title although this was the case last term where they flattered to deceive.
Guardiola was previously full of praise for playmaker Kevin de Bruyne who assisted three goals against Real Madrid and it certainly appears that City will be the team to beat next season.
