Manchester City 1 Wigan Athletic 2 – Uwe Rosler’s side produce massive FA Cup shock
Holders Wigan enjoy a repeat of last season’s FA Cup final by winning at the Etihad Stadium
March 9th, 2014
Arsenal are massive favourites to win the 2014 FA Cup following the mother of all giant-killings on Sunday afternoon where Wigan Athletic deservedly beat Manchester City by a 2-1 scoreline.
Uwe Rosler returned to his former club and received a standing ovation from the City fans although the Latics weren’t just there to make up the numbers and served the game up to their Premier League opponents from kick-off.
A Jordi Gomez penalty put Wigan into the lead in the 27th minute and, while you might have expected Manuel Pellegrini’s side to come out firing after the break, James Perch beat Gael Clichy to a ball across the penalty area to send the visiting supporters into further delight.
It was a strong City side that had been fielded although Yaya Toure was letting frustration get the better of him in the second half and the Ivorian was withdrawn after a yellow card and then another rash challenge which threatened to get him sent off.
Despite Sergio Aguero playing the full ninety minutes, the Argentine was kept quiet although Samir Nasri reduced the arrears in the 68th minute and it appeared as though City were going to come back from a 2-0 scoreline as they had done previously against Watford.
However, Wigan held firm and they will now play Arsenal in the semi-final of the competition, with Hull City facing Sheffield United for the other place in the final of the FA Cup.
Rosler cut a delighted figure at the end of the match and will now hope that he can steer this team to an FA Cup double along with promotion to the Premier League.
