Christian Benteke has once again shone in the Premier League this season and the Belgian could well be leaving Aston Villa for pastures new.

The striker has a £32.5m buyout clause which means that Villa are powerless to keep Benteke should another club stump up the cash which would wrench the player from the Midlands club.

Understandably, Liverpool are interested in snapping up the bulky forward, with Brendan Rodgers having endured a difficult season when it has come to having a goal-getter leading the line.

The departure of Luis Suarez, the succession of injuries suffered by Daniel Sturridge and the failure of Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert to make an impact at Anfield has led Rodgers to find an alternative.

However, Tim Sherwood feels that Benteke should be aiming at playing in the Champions League next season and has told his player that, if he were to leave, he should consider making the switch to a bigger club than Liverpool.

“There’s a buyout clause in his contract so it will be impossible for us to stop him if he wants to go,” Sherwood said. “Someone’s got to meet that buyout clause and if they don’t it won’t be considered because we don’t want to lose him.

“If he were to stay here and score at the ratio that he has since I took over, and ends up with 20 or 30 goals next season and then has a good Euros, he is probably playing for Real Madrid [in 2016]. Christian could go to the best club in the world if he scores 30 goals next season. He could be that good.

“There’s no point going to a club where they don’t cross the ball. All he’s got to do is look at history and see what has happened to players who have left other clubs. They’re going to pastures new, bigger and better clubs, and they don’t actually play, so then they end up looking for a new home again. Christian has made no indication that he wants to leave and I don’t think he should be moving clubs before a European Championship.”
