Liverpool FC in hot pursuit of Alberto Moreno and Javi Manquillo
Brendan Rodgers set to bolster defence by signing defenders from Sevilla and Atletico Madrid
August 1st, 2014
Liverpool have been signing plenty of attacking players this summer, although it appears that defensive cover is set to arrive at Anfield in the form of Alberto Moreno and Javi Manquillo.
Moreno is on the books at Sevilla and could become the first-choice left-back at Liverpool if the Reds are able to wrest him away from the Spanish club, while Manquillo could offer fierce competition for the right-back position.
The latter is currently at Atletico Madrid, with Sky sources reporting that Liverpool are in the running to sign the pair as Rodgers looks to have two quality players for every position on the field.
Chief executive Ian Ayre has flown to Spain to try and secure the deals, with Manquillo potentially joining Liverpool on an initial loan before making a move permanent.
However, Moreno could cost in the region of £20 million according to the latest reports and that would take Liverpool’s spending through the £100 million barrier this summer.
“We still have some business to do,” Rodgers said.
“We have some positions that we want to fill so by the end of August we’ll have a strong squad to go forward with.”
Liverpool have received £75 million from Barcelona for Luis Suarez this summer which has allowed them to strengthen the squad in several departments without a huge financial outlay.
Champions League football returns to Anfield this season and Rodgers appears determined to have the right sized squad of quality players, with the likes of Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Emre Can already on the books.
