Just when you thought things couldn’t get any uglier for Raheem Sterling, it appears that the winger has burnt a final bridge between him and Liverpool Football Club.

Sterling has, in the space of 24 hours, told the Merseyside club that he won’t be joining the squad for a pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia, while it has now been reported that he called in sick on Wednesday rather than attend training.

Undoubtedly, the player is acting on instruction from his agent who has been trying to force a move away from Liverpool for several months, having categorically stated that his client wouldn’t be remaining at Anfield irrespective of the new contract offer.

However, Sterling’s popularity rating is as low as any Liverpool player who has ever been on the books at Anfield, with the supporters sure to give him a hard time next season should he complete an expected move to Manchester City.

City have already had two sizeable offers rejected for the player and will now prepare what is likely to be a third and successful bid for the England international whose phone number was reportedly leaked on the internet in the wake of the most recent events.

Sterling’s role in this saga is open to conjecture, with the player’s agent having engineered an ill-advised interview before the season had ended where the winger explained that no decision had been made over a new deal and that he just wanted to focus on playing football.

Previously to this, Sterling asked Roy Hodgson not to be considered to start a particular match because he was feeling tired, with the England manager then publicly revealing this information.

The player has also been attracting headlines after being seen inhaling nitrous oxide, a legal high, with Brendan Rodgers admitting he would be speaking to the player after it came to light.
