The Champions League draw was kind to three English clubs on Thursday evening, with Manchester City the only side who felt aggrieved that they had once again been handed a tough group.

Liverpool will have been especially pleased with the draw, with the Merseyside club featuring in pot 3. Although Real Madrid are the reigning champions and favourites to win the competition, Basel was probably the best pot two team the Reds could have drawn and Ludogorets Razgrad are minnows.

The bookies make Liverpool a 4/1 chance to win their Champions League group although the Reds are no bigger than 2/7 to claim a qualifying spot and go through to the last sixteen stage.

Brendan Rodgers told the club’s website: “That was last season’s hard work, what we were working towards – getting Liverpool back into a competition where we are synonymous.

“To be back in it again, no matter who we were going to play, it was always going to be exciting. But to have Real Madrid in your group, the champions last season, is going to be special.

“I’m already thinking of Anfield on that night. But there are two other good teams in it along with us. It’s a tough group but we’ll really look forward to the challenge of getting out of the group.”

Arsenal are favourites to win Champions League Group D although Borussia Dortmund should provide stiff competition, with Galatasaray and Anderlecht the other teams in that particular section.

Chelsea have got an even easier group and are no bigger than 4/11 to claim top spot, with Jose Mourinho’s side being matched with Schalke, Sporting Lisbon and Maribor, the team that beat Celtic in the play-off round.

Manchester City once again have a tough group, with Bayern Munich likely to get top spot in the section, while Roma and CSKA Moscow mean that the English champions have lots of work to emerge from this section.
