Hulk’s 19th minute opener appeared to have ended Liverpool’s hopes of progressing to the Europa League last sixteen stage, although Luis Suarez was to make the desired impact by scoring two free-kicks, while Joe Allen also featured on the scoresheet for the Reds.

Suarez scored his team’s first of the evening from a free-kick in the 28th minute and Allen’s goal just before the stroke of half-time seemed to give the Merseyside club real hope that they could get the four goals required to beat Zenit.

When Suarez scored again with an exquisite free-kick in the 59th minute, there was real belief that the Reds would go through at the expense of their Russian opponents.

However, despite concerted pressure, Zenit were able to stay strong and defend for their lives to make the next round on away goals.

It was a cruel blow to Liverpool who pay the price for losing the first leg 2-0 and not getting that all-important away goal which meant it was always going to be a tall order for the Reds if they conceded at Anfield.
