Barcelona striker Lionel Messi has today agreed a new deal to presumably stay at Barcelona beyond 2018 – when his current deal is due to expire. The length of the contract has not yet been revealed.

In a statement released by the club it read – “FC Barcelona has reached an agreement to adjust the terms in the contract binding Leo Messi to the club as a professional first team player. The revised and updated contract will be signed over the next few days.”

Barca coach Gerardo Martino had his say – “It should give peace to him and especially to the club, who can continue to count on the best player in the world,”

Messi who is Barca’s all-time top goal scorer with a total of 354 goals has helped himself, and the club to many titles since he made his professional debut at the age of 17 back in 2004, including six La Liga titles and three Champions League winners’ medals.

The news of this new contract agreement comes a day before he could secure himself yet another La Liga title winning medal when Barca host Atletico tomorrow evening in the title decider. Barca need a win to claim the title whilst Atletico simply need to avoid defeat to secure their first title for 18 years. Barca find themselves three points behind the leaders but with a much superior goal difference. It will only be the third time since the formation of La Liga that the title has gone down to a ‘winner takes it all’ final game of the season, and the first since 1951.

Atletico had a big boost today as manager Diego Simeone announced top scorer Diego Costa will be fit to play what looks like his final match for the club before his inevitable move to Chelsea.

The match kicks off at 17:00 UK Time and you can follow the scores live at Footballscores.com
